Schematic view of the mechanisms of action of small interfering RNAs(siRNAs) and microRNAs (miRNAs). siRNAs and miRNAs are packaged intonanoparticles for effective delivery. (A) Once inside the cell, theanti-sense strand of the siRNA duplex anneals to the corresponding mRNAmolecule (inside or outside of the open-reading frame), and triggers mRNAdegradation. (B) On the other hand, the microRNA targets the3'untranslated region of the mRNA, and suppresses protein synthesis.
