Apoptosis was assessed by measuring the presence of mono- and oligo-nucleosomes as an indication of apoptosis (apoptotic index). Addition of 500 nM 17-allylamino-17-demethoxygeldanamycin (17-AAG) to SKBR3 cells increases apoptosis (t-test *p = 0.01). Starvation alone reduces the overall level of apoptosis observed in SKBR3 cells with serum (untr) (t-test p = 0.004). Each bar represents the average of three experiments with standard deviation.
